One position: Position 1
Position 1 covers frets 1–5 and holds eighteen notes.
This position covers frets 1 to 5, and every note of the scale lies under one hand there. Seven positions like it cover the whole neck, and this is the first of them.
An earlier lesson showed that most notes can be played in several places. That leaves you with a question: which copy of each note should you use? A position answers it.
A box keeps only the copies that fall under one hand. It covers four or five frets, with two or three notes on each string, and nothing in it asks you to move. It is not a different scale and it contains no new notes. It is simply one view of the same neck.
Learn one box thoroughly before starting a second. A box you can play without looking will serve you better than several you only half remember.
